Taiwanese bicycle industry as trendsetter for brands with cutting-edge technologies, highquality
products, and a focus in green mobility
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. Friedrichshafen, September 2, 2011 – On the second day of the
Eurobike trade show, TAITRA hosted a press conference with special remarks from Jeremy Horng,
Executive Director of the TAITRA Exhibition Department, and Chang-Jinn Shen, Director of Taipei
Commercial Division. Tony Lo, CEO of Giant and Chairman of Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association
(TBEA), presented insights and shared his views concerning the future of Taiwanese manufacturing and
its contribution to green mobility. Four leading brands also showcased new innovative products that
further attest to Taiwan’s reputation as a supplier of high-end bicycle products.
Last year, the world’s second-largest bicycle producing nation achieved a record high, totaling US$1.5
billion in exports and shipping 5 million units. While the total value of exports is down by 5 percent in
2011, Taiwan looks to have stabilized export numbers at a high value. According to Lo, the other growing
markets specialize in producing entry-level products while Taiwan operates as a central platform for
establishing top-quality brands that manufacture high-end bicycles.
In the future, Lo sees Taiwan as continuing to be the ideal platform for international brands introducing
and growing their products in the Chinese market. With excellent know-how and as a part of the new
Chinese Taiwanese cross-strait agreement designed to cut tariffs, Taiwan is ideally positioned to facilitate
production and exports to China.
“The future of Taiwan exports is very bright and continues to make a major contribution in the bike
industry. There is a cycling boom that extends across the globe; people care more about the nature of
cycling and are discovering that it is more than a means of transportation. Taiwan is in a great position to
lead the way for the industry in new markets.”
Nolan Cheng, Sales Manager for the JD Group unveiled the Automatic Gear Transmission (AGT) from
TranzX PST. Winner of the Eurobike Gold Award 2011 in the category of components, the new
computer-controlled shifting technology is expected to revolutionize the e-bike industry with its 7-speed
transmission that automatically selects the optimal gear. Cheng also presented a diverse range of products
that further demonstrate the company’s philosophy of delivering fun and environmentally friendly
mobility products for people of all ages.

GreenTrans presented a range of power kit combinations with a special emphasis on the Dual Saddle
Battery (DSB). Deputy General Manager James Chen detailed how the DSB utilizes two batteries on
either side of the e-bike to detect low battery power and switch to the other, a concept that extends riding
distances while decreasing battery charging frequencies. Chen also revealed a dual-sided torque sensor
that delivers appropriate power at a rate that is proportionate to the pedal pressure.
The dbRevO from DK City is a revolutionary system in the form of a kit that upgrades any standard bike
to an e-bike. According to Sales Director Frank Huang, the system compilation of individual components
to create an all-in-one kit that is easy to install and is completed with a wireless LCD console, making it
easy to equip any standard bike with electric power support.
For TAYA Chain, Director Jill Wu focused on Greener Surface Treatment (GST), a range of eco-coating
that protects e-bikes from corrosion, and highlighted three new products. With colored inner plates and
nickel covered outer plates, Teflon colored chains for derailleur systems offer non-rubbing features and
are coated with GST. Also protected with GST, Crank Screws from TAYA feature high anti-rust qualities
and strength of stainless steel. Wu also introduced the Super Single Alpha, a lightweight, half-link chain
design and winner of the Eurobike Award 2010 and Taiwan Excellence 2011.
Despite the drop in exports, the future of the Taiwanese cycling industry looks positive. Lo elaborated,
“In the long run we will see an increase in the industry worldwide as more people discover the
recreational and practical aspects of cycling.”
