JD opens new battery test lab
Battery systems test laboratory reinforces TranzX PST’s commitment to battery safety and advanced technology leadership for e-bikes. Modern paint shop further expands factory capabilities
Bad Nauheim, June 21, 2011 – The JD Group , a major manufacturer of bicycle components and leading developer of electric technology for electric bicycles, recently inaugurated a new battery testing laboratory at its electric mobility and e-bike factory in Dongguan, China to expand on the company’s ability to test advanced energy storage cells, modules and full battery packs. A paint shop with state-of-the-art equipment further complements the company’s full scale and modern production base.
Both extensions have been integrated into the 120,000 square meter factory area as useful additions to the modern facilities while complimenting the pro-duction of complete e-bikes and TranzX PST drive systems.
New battery testing laboratory provides advanced battery engineering resources
The battery systems lab was built in a separate testing facility at the electric mobility manufacturing base and includes diverse technologically advanced features to test and analyze all current battery systems, including lithium-ion, as well as other energy storage technologies. There are several test stands for batteries and thermal chambers to duplicate extreme temperatures and humidity. Through the use of sophisticated equipment to conduct performance, failure and benchmarking testing, JD is able to test electrochemical battery cells and their enclosures, as well as evaluate completed battery packs. Additional tests include resistance to high and low temperatures, compression and drop, general durability for different application methods and electric overcharge and over-discharge.
The valuable results of these tests will be used for a detailed analysis that will help improve the safety and durability of all TranzX PST battery systems. The battery test lab complements JD’s existing testing and R&D complex at the Dongguan factory as well as R&D facilities in Taiwan. The addition of this critical “in-house” responsibility is the latest move in JD’s comprehensive electric bicycle strategy, which is important for the development of safe and advanced drive system technologies.
Though these testing processes are quite similar to other battery tests, JD will not waive an external quality approval having recently just added BATSO certification and testing to the existing official requirements. “This facility will advance our knowledge and testing skills.” explains JD Group’s CEO Johnson Cho. “Our new laboratory represents a heightening of our quality management
systems and raises our commitment to safe technology for high-quality and durable batteries.”
New paint shop uses the latest environmentally friendly products
In addition to the new battery testing laboratory, JD has also implemented an independent paint shop for liquid coating on alloy and steel within its factory. Atop one of TranzX PST’s four production facilities in Dongguan, JD has built a 1,200 square meter hall that incorporates a complete paint shop line for bicycle frames and drive system components. Designed to accommodate modern production techniques and use the latest environmentally friendly products, the newly added paint shop consists of a 1,500 meter long conveyor belt that passes through two computerized disc painters, one manual painting station and an integrated heating and drying area. Up to two color shades can be applied to the bicycle frames and additional decals can be added in a separate working room.
With an internal paint shop, JD offers its OEM clients a comprehensive e-bike service with individual and consistent e-bike designs, particularly those order-ing complete e-bikes. Clients are now able to further profit from the fluent, independent, cost-effective and faster production process.
