「Balgo澳洲巴爾戈丘的原住民藝術」,為巴爾戈丘(Balgo Hills)的當代原住民藝術家以現代的創作媒材,繪畫出對「創世之夢」的遠古神話記憶。展出作品共26件平面作品,皆為澳洲藝術銀行 (Art Bank) 的重要藏品,其中包括一套由資深巴爾戈藝術家特別為此展創作的珍貴版畫10件。18位參展者中,包含已具國際知名度的巴爾戈藝術家,及令人期待的新銳藝術家。此展由澳洲出發,經威靈頓、馬尼拉、夏威夷、曼谷,於1月22日至2月21日於北美館展出後,將陸續至香港、河內、北京及新德里等地巡迴展出。
巴爾戈丘位於澳洲西澳省的東北方,四周都是荒漠,這個世界對於台灣甚至是澳洲當地,都像是一個遙遠的世界。生活在這塊土地的原住民,依循祖先傳承下來的創世神話與泛靈信仰,祈求安然度過種種生存考驗,而與大自然和諧共存的生活經驗中,小山丘、窪地、岩洞與地下水不僅是主要的地景特徵,雨季來臨時茂盛生長的野生動植物,這些都成了他們創作的靈感來源。
1980年代,巴爾戈的作品首度展露在世人面前,色彩鮮豔而大膽,筆調自由而充滿力量,畫面兼融遠古圖騰與當代形式,圖案兼具抽象形態與地景樣貌。他們取材自傳統的部落神話,卻運用具現代性的壓克力彩與蝕刻版畫進行創作,改變一般人對原住民藝術的刻板印象,與對當代藝術中「當代」一詞的理解。
巴爾戈藝術家的創作主題是「創世之夢」,包括先人遊歷過程中走過的土地,甚至是傳說中祖靈輪迴再生的自然萬物。所以對巴爾戈藝術家來說,「自然」不僅僅是自然本身,而是「創世之夢」的真實再現。於是他們透過描繪自然的過程,進行一場召喚「創世之夢」的冥想,感受畫筆之下先人故土所傳承的神聖寓意,在那裡引領出一個不斷新生的宇宙藝術,並同時喚起對神話的記憶,彰顯「創世之夢」的發源地。
藉由本展的推出,希望呈現來自南半球,充滿朝氣與活力的澳洲巴爾戈丘原住民藝術,透過他們豐富多元的藝術樣貌,讓台灣觀眾有機會認識當地澳洲原住民的文化、土地與歷史,進一步深入了解人類的歷史與生命價值。

Balgo comes to Taipei from Australia via critical and popular acclaim in Wellington, Manila, Honolulu and Bangkok. The exhibition will continue to tour internationally, including to Hong Kong, Hanoi, Beijing and New Delhi.
The exhibition comprises a selection of significant artworks from the Artbank Collection including an important suite of prints by senior Balgo artists expressly acquired for the show. Artists include some of the most respected Balgo painters – already acknowledged as stars by the international art world – and some of the exciting new generation of emerging artists.
This exhibition features 26 works by aborigines from the Balgo Hills. The Balgo Hills, surrounded by desert, are in the northeast of Western Australia, a world away from Taiwan and even other parts of Australia. The aborigines there follow the creation myths and animist beliefs of their ancestors, praying to the gods to overcome the various challenges they face in life. The hills, low-lying areas, caves and other landmarks, ground water, the wild plants and animals that flourish in the rainy season are their inspiration.
Paintings from the Balgo Hills were first introduced to the world in the 1980s. The colors are bright and bold, the strokes unrestrained and full of energy, the tableaus combine ancient totems and modern forms, the patterns both abstract in shape and resembling features of the landscape. Their subjects are traditional tribal myths but they create using modern acrylic and etching, changing people’s stereotypical view of aboriginal artists and their understanding of the meaning of “contemporary” in contemporary art.
The theme of the Balgo artists is Dreaming, the land their ancestors wandered across, even all the natural things on earth that are reincarnations of their ancestors. To Balgo artists “nature” isn’t just nature itself, it is the real reproduction of Dreaming. By the process of depicting nature they meditate on Dreaming, understanding the sacred metaphors of their ancestors and ancient land, and creating universal art that is always regenerating while, at the same time, reawakening memories of myths, highlighting the source of Dreaming.
This exhibition will provide an opportunity for people in Taiwan to see this vibrant art from far away in the southern hemisphere, the rich and diverse art allowing the people of Taiwan to get to know the culture, land and history of Australia’s indigenous people, and acquire a deeper understanding of human history and the value of life while doing so.

畫面裡有四個圓頂形狀,意指蘇西.布特亞.布特亞在野地誕生之處附近的石洞。她的母親在石洞裡休息,一邊享受著閒憩片刻,一邊採集著野地食物。作品中密集的點狀筆觸代表野地洋蔥(tjundar),而黑色的圖形則是野地胡蘿蔔(tjirrilpartja)。
The four dome-like forms of this painting suggest a rocky cave close to where Susie Bootja Bootja was born in the bush. Her mother is resting in the cave, enjoying a break while collecting bush tucker. The extensive dot work portrays tjundar (bush onions) while the black shapes are tjirrilpartja (bush carrots).

凱薩琳.帕杜恩家族所在的故鄉,是一處位於大沙地沙漠中巴爾戈南境,稱為納卡拉‧納卡拉的區域,而她的創作多以此地為題材。此地為重要的「七姊妹創世之夢」的發生地之一,故事描述七個姊妹在創世之夢時期,為了逃離一位想要迎娶當中年紀最輕的妹妹的老翁,而於此地遊走。時至今日,這七位姊妹在納卡拉‧納卡拉化身為一群山丘。作品中紅色的區塊代表山丘,白色部分則為遍佈此區的沙丘(tali)。
Kathleen Paddoon has depicted some important country for her family, south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert. This country is named Nakarra Nakarra and is one of the sites of the Seven Sisters Tjukurrpa (Dreaming), a story about seven sisters who travelled this country, running from an old man who wanted to marry the youngest. Today at Nakarra Nakarra a group of parmarr (hills) embodies the seven sisters. The red sections represent the hills while the white sections are the tali
(sandhills) that dominate the country.
