In remarks, the president explained how important the South China Sea region is to national security, as well as the historical and legal evidence on which the ROC's sovereignty over the islands of the South China Sea is based. He then reiterated that the ROC advocates negotiations based on the South China Sea Peace Initiative and Roadmap, and reviewed the ROC's actions and efforts to safeguard Taiping Island's sovereignty and status as a bona fide island.
