Hundreds of police officers in dress uniform have attended a wake for one of two New York City policemen gunned down in their patrol car last Saturday during a daylight ambush in Brooklyn.
Several officers helped carry Rafael Ramos' flag-draped coffin into Christ Tabernacle Church in Qufeens on Friday as dozens of others saluted. Ramos' widow and two sons attended the wake.
Ramos and fellow Officer Wenjian Liu were shot dead by a man claiming to avenge police killings of unarmed black men. The shooter, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, later killed himself.
Vice President Joe Biden and the mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, are expected to attend Ramos’ funeral Saturday.
Liu's funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
Thousands of police officers from around the United States are expected at the funeral for Ramos, who joined the New York Police Department in 2012. Those who knew the 40-year-old Ramos said he was an active member of his church and was studying to be a pastor.
One U.S. airline, JetBlue, has offered free flights to police officers wishing to attend Ramos' funeral in New York. Nearly 700 officers are said to have accepted the offer.
