Major study on cycling patterns From September 19-26 in the Netherlands the second ‘National Bike Counting Week’ (Dutch: Nationale Fiets Telweek) was held. More than 40.000 cyclists participated with a total distance of 2.600.000 kilometers cycled over that week. Although almost every Dutch person rides a bicycle, there is little objective and qualified information about cycling behaviour. The Dutch Cyclists’ Union organised, in collaboration with other organisations on mobility and funded by the government in 2015, this research for the first time. An app on smartphones tracks the movements through the GPS, all the while guaranteeing privacy. The data collected is then analyzed with the tool suite BikePRINT. A big marketing campaign was held to ensure the participation of a vast group of cyclists. The aim of this research is to supply local governments with open data-sets, with which they can rationalize their investments in bicycle infrastructure. For instance it shows in which urban areas bicycle paths suffer from congestion, resulting in delays for the cyclists. For more information look at the website and watch the animation of data from 2015 in the city of Arnhem. Fast cycling routes in the Arnhem Nijmegen region! The Arnhem - Nijmegen region has several fast cycling routes. And new routes are always being added. Fast cycling routes connect residential, work and shopping areas in the different towns and cities. They are fast, direct, comfortable and safe routes over a longer distance. Cyclists are given as much priority as possible. By realizing fast cycling routes, the province of Gelderland and the local Municipalities want to encourage commuters to cycle more frequently.
